Background:
The Lady Meherbai’s “Jubilee Diamond” became part of the Tata story in the early 1900s when the diamond was pledged along with the entire personal wealth of Sir Dorabji Tata and his wife to pull Tisco (the former name of Tata Steel) out of severe financial difficulties in the aftermath of the First World War.
On the occasion of Sir Dorabji Tata Park’s silver jubilee which also happened to be 141st birth anniversary of Lady Meherbai Tata, Tata Steel conceived the idea of rededicating the park with a statue of Lady Meherbai Tata and a resplendent steel tubular structure and a pavilion through which the legacy of the famous “Jubilee Diamond” could be immortalized in steel.
The Diamond Structure and the Pavilion form an integral part of the overall redesign of Sir Dorabji Tata Park. Positioned at the western end of the park, the Pavilion lends to its sustainable and harmonious design, while capturing the timeless elegance of the “Jubilee Diamond”.
Parties involved for structural work of this project:
1.M/s Sagar Business- (BDP - Odisha, Tata Structura)
- Project Execution of the Project
- Order was given to Sagar in Sep’2019 & Inauguration date was 10th Oct 2020
2.JUSCO
- Civil & Landscaping contractor for the project
- View: The challenge was to give the shape of a Diamond considering the massive steel structure which should look like Jubilee Diamonds from the top
- Assembling of each structure: Considering the complexity of the structure, many cutting pieces required to be done and assembled to adjacent pieces carefully.
- 360 degree Profile Cutting: Due to unavailability of Profile cutting machine we did it manually which is very tough and time consuming.
- Design: Though using the best software like TECLA, due to complicated structural design, each pieces needed to be cut by keeping an extra magnitude of 20mm. Then during the final fittings only, each pieces required to be grind, cut and fit as required.
- Erection of the Structure: Due to unconventional structure Assembling, Aligning and erection was a tough task. To erect a massive structure having a weight and height like this require precision planning. Another dimensional challenge was to erect the structure where one side is mirror image of the other side.
- Rainy Season: The painting and erection work was executed during rainy season, which itself shows the difficulty.
- Spanning 16 by 12 meters, the structure is fabricated using Tata Structura tubular steel hollow sections to create an intricate lattice. Weighing 45 metric tonnes, the structure rests on the proverbial “diamond” tip, rising outward from the ground to meet the sky.
- Offering the people of Jamshedpur an oasis for reflection and quiet, the Jubilee Diamond structure also houses a central amphitheater. This space allows visitors to experience the brilliance of the Diamond Pavilion from within its interior.
