THE JUBILEE DIAMOND

·        Project Owner: Tata Steel Ltd

·        Location: Jamshedpur (Jharkhand)

·        Architect: Nuru Karim

·        Structural Designer: Niranajn Basu

·        Material Used: Tata Structura Circular Hollow Sections (YST 355)

·        Sections used: 300x10,200x8,150x5.4,75x5.4,75x3.6, 50x3.6

·        Height of the structure: 50 ft

·        Total Tonnage: 45

·        Fabrication & Erection: M/s Sagar Business Private Ltd

·        Civil Work: JUSCO

Background:

The Lady Meherbai’s “Jubilee Diamond” became part of the Tata story in the early 1900s when the diamond was pledged along with the entire personal wealth of Sir Dorabji Tata and his wife to pull Tisco (the former name of Tata Steel) out of severe financial difficulties in the aftermath of the First World War.

On the occasion of Sir Dorabji Tata Park’s silver jubilee which also happened to be 141st birth anniversary of Lady Meherbai Tata, Tata Steel conceived the idea of rededicating the park with a statue of Lady Meherbai Tata and a resplendent steel tubular structure and a pavilion through which the legacy of the famous “Jubilee Diamond” could be immortalized in steel.

The Diamond Structure and the Pavilion form an integral part of the overall redesign of Sir Dorabji Tata Park. Positioned at the western end of the park, the Pavilion lends to its sustainable and harmonious design, while capturing the timeless elegance of the “Jubilee Diamond”.

Parties involved for structural work of this project:

1.M/s Sagar Business- (BDP - Odisha, Tata Structura)

    •  Project Execution of the Project
    • Order was given to Sagar in Sep’2019 & Inauguration date was 10th Oct 2020

    2.JUSCO

    • Civil & Landscaping contractor for the project

        Challenges in this project:
    1. View: The challenge was to give the shape of a Diamond considering the massive steel structure which should look like Jubilee Diamonds from the top
    2. Assembling of each structure: Considering the complexity of the structure, many cutting pieces required to be done and assembled to adjacent pieces carefully.
    3. 360 degree Profile Cutting: Due to unavailability of Profile cutting machine we did it manually which is very tough and time consuming.
    4. Design: Though using the best software like TECLA, due to complicated structural design, each pieces needed to be cut by keeping an extra magnitude of 20mm. Then during the final fittings only, each pieces required to be grind, cut and fit as required.
    5. Erection of the Structure: Due to unconventional structure Assembling, Aligning and erection was a tough task. To erect a massive structure having a weight and height like this require precision planning. Another dimensional challenge was to erect the structure where one side is mirror image of the other side.
    6. Rainy Season: The painting and erection work was executed during rainy season, which itself shows the difficulty.
        Key Features of the project:
    1. Spanning 16 by 12 meters, the structure is fabricated using Tata Structura tubular steel hollow sections to create an intricate lattice. Weighing 45 metric tonnes, the structure rests on the proverbial “diamond” tip, rising outward from the ground to meet the sky.
    2. Offering the people of Jamshedpur an oasis for reflection and quiet, the Jubilee Diamond structure also houses a central amphitheater. This space allows visitors to experience the brilliance of the Diamond Pavilion from within its interior.

The Rath - A Steel Monument at Forest Park, Bhubaneswar

Project Owner:             Tata Steel Ltd

Location:                       Bhubaneswar (Odisha)

Architect:                       Nuru Karim

Structural Designer:      Tata Growth Shop

Material Used:               Tata Structura Circular Hollow Sections

                                       (YST 355)

Sections used:               SHS 150x6, SHS 113.5x5.4, SHS 91.5x5.4,

                                      CHS 60.3x4.5, CHS 48.3x5

Height of the structure:  20 ft

Total Tonnage:               13.5

Fabrication & Erection:  M/s Sagar Business Private Ltd

Civil Work:                     Mr Manoranjan Tripathy

         Background:

“Charkha” - A structured monument of 11-meter tall in the cross maidan, Mumbai, India depicts the ‘spinning wheel’ symbol promoted by Mahatma Gandhi to illustrate contemporary India’s spectrum of social and cultural dimensions established in the Year 2012. After receiving appreciation from people for its design and simplicity for the “Charkha” project, a thought came to Mr Kulvin Suri’s (Chief of Sales & Marketing, Tata Tubes) mind to create another monument in Odisha to project Odisha’s rich culture and tradition.

To turn this idea into reality, he discussed this with Mr Sunil Kishorepuria (Director, Sagar Business Private Limited). For this, they approached The Mayor of Bhubaneswar, Mr. Ananta Narayan Jena, to showcase an architectural brilliance which will be imprinted in the minds of people forever.

The “Rath” design is based on the wheel of Sun Temple, incorporating concentric polygons such that it will look like a circle. In the initial stage, it was planned that the radius of polygons goes on decreasing and at the endpoint it forms a circle.  Later on for safety issues, the open polygon structure was scraped and later on the same structure was reversed and was linked in the opposite orientation.

Parties involved in structural work of this project:

            1.    M/s Sagar Business- (BDP - Odisha, Tata Structura)

-       Project Execution of the Project

-      Order was given to Sagar in Mar’2018 & Inauguration date was 13th Aug 2019

2.    M/s JBS Engineering

-       Structural contractor for the project

-       Fabrication & Erection of the structures

   3.    Mr Manoranjan Tripathy

 -       Civil & Landscaping contractor for the project

Challenges in this project:

1. Safety: For building such architecture in a public place, having people moving around the structural area day in and out was a tough challenge, keeping safety as a priority for the park visitors. We barricaded the construction site and covered it from top to bottom so that no structural part moves beyond the covered area during construction. We stopped the construction work from 6 AM to 10:30 AM in the morning and 4 to 7 PM in the evening considering the movement of pedestrian numbers at the site.

2. Climate: Building the structure in the rainy season was a tough task for the team on steel fabrication and waterlogging in the construction site which exposes to the possible soil collapse.

3. Manual Work: Neither the BDA nor the Park authority has any idea about the cables and pipes inside the soil of the site. For that, instead of using any machines for digging the area, we did the manual work considering the degree of criticality of damage that can happen by cutting off any pipes or cables.

4. Material Transportation: Transporting the structure from the Fabrication site to the erection site was complex considering the size of the structure and transporting it through the city.

  Key Features of the project:
 1)  The structure looks like rotating polygonal wheels which are laid out on 120-degree tri-axis engineered with perfection. This represents the 8hr subdivision of the 24hr cycle and the concept of time

 2) The “Rath” pavilion underbelly houses an Amphitheatre for events and performances, which can be accessed by people from all walks of life.

German firm Hafele launches Nagold home appliance series in Indian market

Germany-based hardware solutions provider, Hafele's, on Thursday launched its new line of modular kitchen appliance products under the brand, Nagold in the Indian market. The firm, which first launched its operations in India in 2001, said the Nagold series of home appliances will offer a whole range of built-in kitchen items to the customer that include hobs, microwave, electric ovens, dishwashers and refrigerators. Nagold is a town in Germany, where Hafale is based. The range of India-specific products targeted at the upwardly mobile is available at prices ranging from Rs 17,000 for built-in hobs and hoods to Rs 1.25 lakh for refrigerators, said Jurgen Wolf, Managing Director, Hafele India Pvt Ltd. India's estimated Rs 25,000 home appliances market, has grown at 25 percent on a year on year basis. The mid-segment is estimated to have a size of Rs 500-600 crore and constitutes very few players, Wolf said. "If there is any one thing Indians love more than their food, it is the cooking. The cooking methods are different and their cleaning needs are different. Grinding, kneading, pounding, scrubbing-food is approached with vigour and passion," explains Wolf, of the reason for coming out with a unique made-for-India range of kitchen appliances. "It is this market that we are eager to capture," he says. Early this year, LG electronics, another major player in the home appliance segment, also announced plans to launch India-specific products in the home appliances segment. According to Wolf, in the past, dishwashers were a difficult category to sell to an Indian consumer. "But today, the scenario has changed," he said. The change is attributable to the increased awareness and the popularity of cookery shows on TV and tourism, Wolf said, adding these have played a huge part in the shift to perspective and consequently, utilitarian value of the product. Hafale, which logged a turnover of Rs 270 crores in 2014 in the Indian market, expects the Nagold series to contribute an additional 35 crores to its turnover. In 2015, the company targets a turnover of around Rs 340 crores for 2015 from the domestic market.
